THREE GUYS AND… TV

“GOTHAM: JEROME ISN’T THE JOKER!?”
written by Dominick Cappello
The producers of “Gotham” have always maintained that Cameron Monaghan’s character Jerome Valeska wasn’t The Joker. To be honest, I think that was their plan in season one. To introduce many possible candidates over time who could one day become The Joker, but then it seemed as if the fan support for Jerome forced their hand. I mean, they even cut off his face like New 52 Joker. Last night in a tweet that he’s since deleted, Cameron Monaghan confirmed that Jerome isn’t The Joker after all. As much as I’d like to believe this is a misdirect, I think we must all now except it as the truth. The problem I have is that we were never given any other potential Jokers that make sense. The producers put all their eggs in the Jerome basket. Will the real Joker just be copycat of Jerome? The Joker is a character who does what’s unexpected, so him being a copycat doesn’t seem like how he would operate. If the series hits a home run in how it introduces whoever the real Joker is, I’ll be the first to tip my hat, but right now it feels anti-climatic to know that a character we’ve invested in isn’t who we thought he was. I can imagine fans of the series rejected whoever The Joker is with #WeWantJerome!
